A wbolesome-looking barque-rigged vessel, fitted with auxiliary power, entered the Harbour yesterday afternoon, and attracted considerable attention as she proceeded to moorings in Neutral Bay. The stranger proved to be the Chilian training-ship General Baquedano, which is on a cruise, with a number of naval cadets on board. The cadets are undergoing a course of training to fit them for. higher positions in the navy. As a training-ship, the General Baque- | dano has proved extremely useful. She [is a roomy vessel, with plenty of deck space, and carries a fine spread of cani vas. The vessel had previously visited I Sydney on two-occasions. She is now homeward bound to the West Coast, I having come here direct from Albany. I On reaching the anchorage the General Baquedano saluted the port, and also j the flag of Vice-Admiral Sir Richard I Poore. The flagship Powerful acknowledged the salute to the Commander-in-I Chief, and an exchange of visits between I officers of the warships followed. i The General Baquedano started out from Valpraiso seven months ago' on her 'present cruise. She called first of all at Easter Island, and then proceeded to | Tahiti and Honolula. She afterwards made for the East and Spent a month in Japanese waters, touching at Yokohama and Nagaski. Calls were also made at Shanghai, Manila, and Singapore. From the • last-named port the went on to -Albany, and while there met Admiral Sperry's fleet. Only a day was' spent at Albany, the vessel sailing thence direct for Sydney last Saturday week. The cruise, which has been made mostly under sail, was uneventful. After a stay of a fortnight" In Sydney, the General" Baquedano will sail for Auckland, and thence proceed to Talcahuano, on the West Coast. The training ship is in charge of Captain Augustin Fontaine, and the principal officers with him are Commander Roberto Garay, Lieut. Bernardo i Riquelme, Lieut. Alberto Parides (pilot), Lieut. Luis Barrientos, Sub-LaeutSi Flamarim Corres, Annado Reyes, Agustin Prat, and Julio Grez, Army-Lieut. Abraham Plaza. Chief Engineer Dositeo Labia, Second Engineer Fernando" Molim, Paymaster Fernando Blachef, AssistanfcPaymaster Carlis Zegers. Mr. K. Kagu- . Ada is the instructor. The ship carries four first-class and 23 second-class midshipmen.
