ATHLETICS.
So much controversy has been cieated by the times R. E. Walker is said to have accomplished, that our readers will be interested to know that it is intended, should lie be timed to beat the record in his heat of tbe 100 yards invitation handicap (which race was to have taken place shortly after the last mail left) to run the final tbe reverse way of the track. This suggestion, as the on'y absolutely fair way to test Walkers times, has been mad-j by " Strephon" in the " Athletic News," and naturally iias been cordially supported by all those really interested in athletics, who only desire that no possible doubt can be placed on the genuinity of a record, and in deciding to come to the arrangement outlined above, the committee of the sports have done well. It means that Walker has the opportunity of making a record that cannot fail to go on the book if established, and! for the honour of the young Natal sprinter we sincerely trust he succeeded.
