INDIAN FLOODS.
D3ATH KOIX OF TEN THOUSAND.
HEROIC RESCUES.
(Received 5.15 a-m.) CALCUTTA, October 1. Many heroic rescues occurred, during the Hyderabad floods, which "were -worse than at first reported. One estimate gives a death roll of 10,000. The nurses at the Victoria Zenana saved the patients by carrying them over the flat roofs of the buildings, which were almost covered by the raging waters. British officials in boats rescued many natives from the trees and tops of the t&mples, where they had climbed as the floods advanced. The waters receded almost as quickly as they rosa, and from a rushing torrent CO feet desp, the Mussi River became a trickling stream in two days. Starving and destitute victims of the flood are looting the grain and liquor ■shops in the devastated area. Catholic priests stationed in Hyderabad showed extreme heroism and coolness, and their attituda immensely encouraged the panic-stricken natives.
