TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Trades' and Labour Council was held last evening, the President (Mr A. Rosser) presiding. There was a good attendance. Delegates: Delegates from the Boilermakers' and Butchers' Unions were welcomed to the meeting, the chairman expressing his pleasure at the affiliation of these organisations, as meaning additional strength in the future. Cooks and Waiters: The Amalgamated Society of Cooks and Waiters (Wellington) asked the Council what it was doing in the matter of forming an Hotel Employees' Union, this being, in their opinion, very desirable. The letter was referred to the sub-committee appointed to inquire into the subject. Oyster Ticking: In regard to the Council's letter referring to the oysterpicking, the Prime Minister thanked the Council for its congratulations on the Government's action in taking over the beds. The Hon. J. A. Millar, to whom the matter had been referred, said that the Council's representations would bo borne in mind, and every effort had been made so far to obtain only good and reliable men for the purpose. Hospitail: Dr Valintine. InspectorGeneral of Hospitals, in reply to a letter from the Council, stated that the petition from the Waimate Hospital Reform League had already been brought under his notice, and was receiving consideration. Arbitration Act: Mr A. R. Barclay forwarded a number of additions, which, he suggested, should be made to the Arbitratiou Bill. Ha expressed his opinion that there should be more Labour members in the House. (Applause.) It was decided to write to Mr Barclay thanking him for his elloris in the direction of improving the condition of the workers. Arbitration Court: Mr F. E. Baume, M.P., replying to the Council's resolution, demanding the removal of Mr Justice Sim from the Arbitration Court Bench, said that he could not see his way to support the attitude of the Council on this point.
