ORGAN RECITAL.

Lovers of music who attended the organ | recital given by Mr Horace Hunt, Mus. Bac, in St Benedict's Church last evening, were amply recompensed by the excellent programme submitted. Considering the strong counter attractions, there was a good attendance, and it was evident from the rapt attention of those present that the excellent recital was fully appreciated. Mr Hunt's contributions were very varied In style, demonstrating his ability as an organist, and also the capabilities of the instrument upon which he played. The opening number was Mendelssohn's Sonata No. 2 in C minor. In the greve adagio, the tremolo stop was used with great effect. Then quite as a marked change came the second movement, allegro maestoso c vivace, in which good execution was shown. The third movement, allegro moderato, was also admirably played. Following this was a vocal solo by Mr Arthur Ballance, the Item being Tennyson's "Crossing the Bar" (Willeby), in which a fine bass was heard to good effect. Gounod's "O Divine Redeemer" was also well sung later in the evening by the same gentleman. A most pleasing vocal solo was that of Miss Gertrude Hunt, who sang with great feeling, "A Legend" (Tschaikowsky). Mr Hunt played in masterly style Gounod's beautiful romance, "Le Soir," also a "Volkslied" by Wolstenholme, In both of which great attention was shown to the modulated passages. A very effective number, which brought out the full power of the organ, was "'Fiat Lux" (Dubois), while an intermezzo in T> flat (Holllns) was undoubtedly one of the features of the recital. Another admirable number was Bach's toccato and fugue In D minor, into which the organist put some splendid work. An "andante con moto," by Smart followed, and Guilmaut's "Graud Choeur In D," In which Mr Hunt did excellent pedal work, formed a fitting finale to a most enjoyable recital. .
