MARATHON WINNERS.
HATES AND DORANDO MATCHED. NEJW YORK, September 28. A match has been arranged between J. J. Hayes (America), winner of the race at the Olympic games, and Pietro Dorando, the Italian pedestrian, who finished first in this race, but was disqualified for receiving assistance a few yards from the finish. The contest will take place in New York. AN ITALIAN RACE. ROME, September 28. The Marathon race organised at Milan by the newspaper "II Recolo," attracted 800 entries. The doctors would not allow 300 of these to compete. Rosi, a Milanese youth, won in 54 mm. 6 sec. Dorando refused to have anything to do with the race, owing to dissensions. According to the time the race in question must have been somewhere in tho neighbourhood of ten miles, and to dignify such an event with the title of a Marathon, a 28 mile rac., is stretching the point rather far.
