MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS.

Waiotahi.—No. 6 level: Driving on the dropper from the winze is in progress, with a view to opening it up for stoping. The stoping of the dropper above this level is being continued as usual. Cure reef: At a point about 50ft west of the block, stoped out under foot an underhand stope is being taken, and a few colours of goid have been seen. When driving the level west some time ago colours of gold were seen at this 1 point. No. 5 level: Driving west on the No. 5 reef Is In hand, and is in a distance of 165 ft from the Mary Ann shaft The reef so far is not well defined, but it should i improve as progress further west is made. In the stopes on the footwall dropper above this level not a great deal has been done, , owing to the men being engaged in other | work. The second stope in the Cure reef has been carried west of the rise for a distance of 65ft, and during tbe week good dabs of gold have been seen, 31b of picked stone being selected. No. 4 level: The rise ou the hangingwall rib of the main reef is up a distance of Bft. The rib of quartz varies greatly in width, and is now a good deal split op. A few good dabs of gold are, howet,r, occasionally seen, and the quartz being broken from here is payable. Driving on this rib has again been commenced. The I rise above this level on the main reef is np a distance of 102 ft, but the reef is of a mullocky character. Cleaning up for uae month will take place on Thursday next. | Katanga-rake.—ln a second telegram yesterday afternoon, the manager reported: "_old showing in the stone. Reef looks welL" He also reports that during the past week No. 1 level croescut has been extended an additional 12ft, making a total length of 452 ft driven at this point to date. The country in the face Is jointly andesite of a good description for gold, and the Woodstock reef may come to hand at any time. At the Kankanl low level the country is first-class sandstone for carrying goldbearing reefs, and several highly-mineralis-ed veins have recently been passed through." New Waitekaurl.—The lode in tbe back of the stope at the Intermediate level looks very well. The leading stope will be extended another 30ft, which should give about 40 tons of ore in hand, as a trial parcel to get crushed to ascertain the value of the block. The winze at the Queen level Is down Oft, and the quartz broken for 4ft_ Dominion.—The low level crosscut is in 80ft. Some prospecting work has been done on the new reef. As the drive put in years ago is parallel with the reefs, the manager has commenced to drive at right angles, and expects to intersect the reef at an! estimated distance of 35ft, which would give 18 to 20ft of backs. Tairua Extended.—No. 2 level has been advanced 16ft iv favourable country for progress. Several small veins have been passed through, some of them 3in in width, carrying minerals, but no gold. As this crosscut is penetrating new country the i manager hopes to meet with something payable before long. Goiden Belt.—During tbe past week a good tonnage of ore has been broken from the Bluffs section. At the Golden Arrow, opening out la still continuing, and when this is completed, a good supply of ore will be available. The drive in the Consolation section is in 6Gft. The country Is very P __7, and carries little or no values. Crushing is proceeding with two shifts, and from this out the manager hopes to keep the battery going continuously with three shifts. Thames. —An underhand stope has been taken out immediately below the tributers' workings. The lead is not so wide as it was in the winze, neither is it up to expectations.

Tairua Broken nills.—The main low level crosscut is still in light country. In the drive north, the nevy reef is mneh poorer in value than when last reported, and the quartz Is not being saved at present No 1 reef north at the battery level shows no change. In the eastern level, No. 1 reef is small, and the are of very low grade.

I During the week 65 tons of quartz were treated for a return of 68 ozs of amalgam, j making a total of 276 ozs on hand. j Old Hauraki. —In the drive south at the 300 ft level the No. 8 reef averages 81n. of splendid looking quartz. Strong colours of gold have been seen In the No. 9 reef, in the fourth ami fifth stopes. From the second stope on the west branch, 2lbs of picked stone have been secured. The reef averages 4iu, and looks favourable for a patch of good ore. At the 220 ft level, in the Bunker's section, a start has been made to drive westward on the fault, with ttoe object of recovering Legge's reef, which Is In hand at the 160 ft level above. At the 160 ft level the reef averages 6iu, and from its appearance, gold may be met with at any breaking down. The manager Intends ! sinking here, as he is of opinion that by the downthrow of the reef the oontinnatlon of the chute of gold known as "the bank" I In the Ilanraki is underneath. At No. 2 level east. Bunker's section, the tribute lead Is large, with country rock Intermixed. The manager thinks it will become more de lined as it gets away from the slide, into the loua< section. At the 100 ft level. Wills leader is 2in wide, and highly mineralised. Uld Kapanga.—Martin Brothers continue to get payable ore from their tribute. Many applications are being made for other tributes In the mine. South. Kapanga.—Driving has again been resumed on the course of the reef The country Is still rather much disturbed but oy present appearances a change should b? f*Jo? e w'*!fl.£ an ?-.,, rrh , c reef ' wh,ch Is now the -UJL. The crushing of 24 ore v- ro! U. the Ist1 st0 Pcs on th? small for ?h_ abov V V >- 2 ' eTe ' has "^e a completed, for the good return of £33G 7/1 Waitangi.—The rise from the low level is now up about 14ft above the back of the level. About sft of the hanglngwall portion of the reef is being broken down in the'rise, and the quartz continues to look well, and Is still carrying telluride indications, through which dabs of gold can be seen. In the cross cut from No •» level rather slow progress Is being made.~owing to the very hard nature of the country, and there is still about 25ft to drive to reach the point where it is expected to cut the reef, which at the present rate of progress will take at least another month to complete.

May Queen.—The southern drive from the iNo. i) level of the yueen of Reauly shaft in the May Queeu mine is being continued •beyond the break. The lode has not yet ■bet. picked up, but, from present indications, it will probably be met with duriu-' the next few days. Operations in the northern crosscut are confined to drivingeast and west on the leader. A total distance of 40ft has been driven—lsft west and 25ft east—and a further 30ft eastward should reach the junction of the main portion of No. 4 lode. Very little quartz lias been broken down for the week. The crushing of G2 loads of general ore and (501b of picked stone from the stopes on the footwall branch leader above No. 6 level was completed In the early part of the week for the satisfactory return of 1990_ 12dwt of gold, of the vainc of £561 7/6.

Alburnta.—The main rise from the Moanatiuia. tunnel In the Alhumla mine is being continued in the footwall of tbe reef, and about half the distance required to connect with the Sons ot Freedom level has been accomplished, the total height risen being 272 ft from the hack of the tunnel. The distance required to connect the two levels Is 53& ft. Southern Queen. —The quartz stripped last week in the stopes on the Atlantic reef above No. 2 level sliowed nice dabs and colours of goid when broken down. The reef is looking first-class. The main level has been cleaned, rails laid, and a start made to drive. A crashing of 2S loads is about completed. A good amount of tailings have yet to go through the berdans. Bonanza.—A nice body of quartz has been intersected, measuring about Bin. It contains nice irou and copper pyrites. This will now be driven on instead of continuing the crosscut. Halcyon.—The new level is in 82ft. Work has not proceeded in the rise on account of being short-handed.
