i The ordinary meeting of the Auckland , City Council took place last night. Those present were: His Worship the Mayor (Mr ' A. M. Myersi. Messrs 1,, .1. Bagnall, M. ' Casey. A. J, Entn'can. R. Tndehops", 11. ,11. Sraeeton. Gl Knight. C Grey. W. ; Somers, P. Mackay, C. J. Tarr, and J. Tatlerson. Metbncn Hamlet. -The Commissioner for l Crown Lands inquired wh.it would be the <ost of laying branch pipe* for water to and , down en<h road in the Methuen Hamlet, al- ' lowmg settlers tn provide and pay for cnu- ' nccfion from it to their respective dwellings. - The waterworks engineer (Mr .1. Carlaw) rej imrterl that this was a question for the t Government engineer, as he did not antirl- ' p.ito that the Council would enter into competition with contractors to lay mains 1 outside their boundaries. The cost" of connocttng to tbe main, near Oakley's Creek on the New North-road, tbe Council supplying branch and labour only, would be £5. 1 It was decided to reply that tbe Council . was not prepared to lay mains in the district of another local body. Fire Escapes. -Mr Percy Hargrove again 1 brought under the notice of the Council the l necessity for fire escapes in private bouses, . and asked, if there was a by-law making such escapes necessary, who was responsible for its enforcement? The Town Clerk was i authorised to reply to the communication. [ Labour Day.—The I.abonr Celebration Committee asked the Council to permit its employees to take part in the procession ou 5 Labour Day, October 14th. The application ( was granted. , Municipal Abattoirs.—The instrument issued by the Minister of Agriculture authorising the Council to establish an abattoir for the city and the suburbs was received. Constitution Hill Percy Holt wrote pointing out the dilapidated • state of the Constitntioii Hill Reserve, and suggesting that. th<*city landscape gardener should he authorised to prepare a scheme for it-s permanent improvement, and to execute works which would remove its neglected appearance. The question was referred to the Works Committee ; The Drainage Rill. -The Auckland East , Branch of the Liberal and Labour Federation forwarded a resolution agreeing with i the oompromLse made by the City Council in respect of tho Drainage Bill, 'and mmmending the action of the delegates.- The letter was received. Ix>eal Industry. -The secretary of the Trades Council wrote stating that a com- . plaint had been made to that body to the effect that the Tramway Company were Importing their brake blocks, when they , could be made in the Dominion. The , Council suggested that the representatives of [he municipality should make strong re- • commendations to the company on the nei cessity of complying with the terms of the , deed of delegation. The matter was refprred to the Electrical Tramways Com- > mitt.cc. A Troublesome Sewer. Mr T. J. Phillips, of Argyle-streel, drew attention tn the nuisance caused by the sewer running through, his property, which, if allowed tocontinne. i might become the cause of serious sickness iin the neighbnurood. The sanitary inspec- , tor reported that tbe condition of affairs \ at this sewer outfall was similar to that, at others, and could not be remedied until connection was made with the new inter I cepting sewer.- The matter was referred to the Streets Committee. Town Hall Messrs 3. J. and E. J. Clark, > of Melbourne, acknowledged their appointi nifnt as architects for the new town hail. , and confirmed the terms previously agreed upon on August 24th. Park-road.- Tbe secretary of the Newmarket Borough Council wrote stating that the Council could not .see its way to take action . at present as regards the formation of Parkroad. 1 Albany-road.—A. G. Lee, Mt. Eden, wrote requesting the Couucil to have one or two , additional gratings put in on the east side of Albany-road, as the one at preseut in the hollow could nut carry away the water. The assistant engineer recommended the build- ■ ing of a new cess pit connected to the main, and the alteration of one ordinary grating. .of a new one with side overflow entrance, m a cost of _14. The application was granted iv terms of the engineer's report. Albert-street.—A half score of business firms petitioned the Council to remove the unsightly bank of earth abutting on to Albert-street, between Wellesley and Cook streets. The bank was annoying and dangerous to pedestrians, through the drainage passing over the fool path.—The matter was referred to the Works Committee. Victoria Park.- 11. Hill, chief clerk of the Auckland Gas Co., Limited, asked the Council to authorise the opening of the Beaumont.street Victoria Park gates. They had understood that, the gates were only to be closed for three mouths. To have these gates open would be a boon to the employees, now that summer was approaching. Tbe city landscape gardener recommended i that ihe gate should be opened for a time, and pointed out that if the men made a | track across the cricket gronnd the gate .could be closed again. -The application was granted on these terms. Tenders. The following tenders were received for ihe formation of llackctt street: T. William.-, i;>S.".: Mays and Gordon, £l_iv>: .1. .!. McLean. <._U--T>: It. Wilson, £10711; A. Koss, £116-; Larkin, £1120; Uiiuu, £1003: Cairns and Hunt. £1110. The' engineer's estimate was £.071. and ne was authoi-ised to accept the lowest tender, if ho was satisfied with it. The engineer's estimate for the erection of a bather's shed at Shelly Beach was £240, and the lowest tender was that of Mr .1. TI. Peat, of £__3. The City Engineer was authorised to accept this tender if satisfied. Customs-street West. —Mr Bagnall said that something should, be done to the footpaths in Customs-street West, which were at present iv a dangerous state. Electric Power Station.—Notice of objection having been given by the Harbour Board and the Farmers' Freezing Co., Ltd.. against the City Council taking a piece of land for the proposed new electric power station, it was decided that the objectors might bring forward evidence iv support of their contentious on October S. 190 S. Tramway Profits.- -The City Treasurer, having pointed out that over eight months elapsed after the close of tbe financial year before ihe Council received its share of the profits, recommended that the Tramways Company be requested to expedite payment. It was decided that the Auckland Tramways Company be requested to expedite payment of tbe Council's share of the profits. Winchester-street. -It was decided, on the recommendation of the Works Committee, to kerb and channel Winchesterstreet, at n cost of £130. Sewer Extension.—The Works Committee reported that the City Engineer had recom-,' mended that a new sewet be constructed j from Beresford-street gully sewer, consisting of a l_in pipe in Newton Place, and a 9iu pipe in Karangahape road, to the lane by the bank, to cost £:Y> (of which the bank will contribute £121. and 300 feet, further east .-ilong Karangahape-road, to provide for the buildings on the north side, to cost £210. —It was decided that the work should be done by day labour at a total net cost of £403. Ambulance Station—The St. John Ambulance Association not. favouring the proposal to give them room for au ambulance station in the propospd bath buildings at the corner of Symonds-street. it was decided. Iv view of the City Engineer's report, and of the fact that the Cemetery Closing Bill had passed throngh the House of Representatives, that no further action should be taken ia the meantime.
