Charles Winborn and Arthur Canham, I two farriers, have been charged with; ; threatening to murder J. B. Joel, the, j South African magnate, unless he paid ; j them £-30-. j J Several remarkable, letters were read i I showing that the writers posed as mem- ' ■ bers of the "Cameria.ste Monenero,"' a secret society. They informed Joel's wife that a mem- ' ber ot the S'X-iety had been chosen by lot to assassinate Joel, unless the sum mentioned were paid over at once. If the terms of the society were accepted Mrs. -T.-iel was to advertise in the daily paper- to that effect. The letters were out in the hands of the police, and. on their advice, an advert i~i>nit-_i was. inserted in the "Daily Chronicle" agreeing to pay the £500. i On seeing i.iis advertisement another i letter was sent to Mrs. Joel stating that a man would call for the money at Joel's , house. ! A detective remained in the hou=e, and ! w-hen Canham called h P was arrested. He ithen confessed that Winborn had written Che letters, and promised him half the ' mone\ if he assisted. Winborn was later arrested, and both were brougnt before the Court this morning, a remand being granted. Bail was refused. j
