THE BOAT RACE.
WIN FOR THE LOUISIANA. A BIG STAKE. SYDNEY, August 24. Tremendous interest was taken by the Americans in the race rowed this afterInoon between champion crews from the j Illinois and Louisiana for a stake of 28,000 dollars (£5600), a very large sum in private wagexs changing hands between men of the other ships. The race was rowed across the Heads from near Manly to Clark Island, a' distancfe of three miles and a-half. Each ; ship contributed 14,000 dollars. | The Illinois got away first, but the | Louisiana, rowing better, drew level in 1 the first quarter of a mile, and at the mile had six lengths advantage, eventually winning by 20 lengths. A WET NIGHT. CELEBRATIONS PARTLY SPOILED. SYDNEY, August 24. The illuminations in tie city and on the warships and the "Continental" in the Domain were partly spoiled by rain to-night. Notwithstanding this, there were immense crowds in the streets and in the Domain. Lord Northcote's ball at Government House was a brilliant function. INTRUSION OF POLITICS. LONDON", August 24. "The Times" says that Sydney's welcome to the fleet makes it clear that the possible political issues have been kept so much in the background that their mention in the comments of the British and American Press is felt almost as an intrusion. It emphasises that Australian minds, from the highest to the lowest, are occupied with the pleasure of giving hosipitality, to entertaining, and welcoming 1 the country's friends, and with a feeling of pride in the position of the Empire's representatives.
