WELLINGTON V. WANGANUI.

AN EASY WIN FOR WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WANGANUI, Saturday. There was glorious weather for the Wanganui-Welling-ton match, and a. good attendance of -spectators. H. Tilley refereed. The game resulted in a rather easy win for Wellington by 25 to 13, which could easily have been larger, for they were far and away cleverer than the locals, who played without spirit or vim. Wanganui kicked off against the sun, play at once settling in Wellington's territory. Evenson cleared by a good kick past half-way, where a Wellington passing rush was nipped in the bud. Play hovering for some minutes in local quarters, Ryan had a shot from a freekick, but no goal resulted, and Wanganui gradually worked play to neutral zone. From a line-out, Green secured, and, completely beating the opposition, passed to Wilson, who scored between t__o posts. The try -wa__ _n_onverteii. Two ___J___-r__&s after. The Wellington forwards, playing with great dash, made another big charge, which ended in Mitehinson getting over. The try was not converted. Wanganui now livened up, and, by strenuous play, changed the venne to the other end of the field, where a fine passing run ended in Seeling dodging through and scoring, adding the major points himself. This player, a moment after, injured one foot, and had to retire, . Southcombe replacing him. Wellington continued to have the best of the play, the local backs being all at sea. J. Ryan added another try to Wellington's score, and Mitehinson converted. After some minutes' uninteresting play Mitchell broke away, but, being completely unsupported, an excellent chance of scoring was lost. Wellington again attacked, their backs playing with clockwork precision, Wanganui proportionally becoming more listless and disorganised. The locals, however, more by good luck than anything else, managed to avert a further score, the spell ending: Wellington 16 Wanganui 5 The resumption of play saw little difference in the merits of the teams. The good play of the local forwards was nullified by wretched fumbling of their backs. A free shot by Wellington was fruitless, and play began gradually to shift to the other end, where Wanganui were awarded a free-kick, Southcombe piloting the ball over. Wellington then set up a hot attack, a forward dash ending in Rush getting over. The try was not converted. Several minutes followed in Wanganui's side of the half-way, Meuli at length intercepting and getting clean away. Only one man supported him, and when he got the pass he was promptly downed. An exciting rally now followed, the ball travelling up and down in more lively fashion. Wellington began to show some falling off, notwithstanding which they continued all too good for. their opponents. Over-eager-ness of their forwards alone prevented a big score. Roused by their supporters, Wanganui now put in a big effort, and a series of determined attacks ended in Abbott outrunning the visiting backs and scoring behind the posts. Southcombe converted. Wellington then put on the screw, and Rush marked, kicking a goal. This was followed a minute later by a try scored by Hardham, which was not converted. There was no further score, Wellington -Binning by 25 to 13.

AUCKLAND B. V. NORTHERN WAIROA. DARGAVTIiLE, Saturday. The weather was fine, and the ground in fair order for the Wairoa v. Auckland B. football match. The attendance was large. Auckland, winning the toss, played with the sun behind them, and for • the first five minutes vigorousl/ attacked Wairoa's goal. Thereafter the order of events was reversed, the local team keeping the visitors on the defensive all the time, with the exception of once, when Wairoa's line was in danger for a brief space. Twenty minutes after opening play Wairoa scored a try, which was not converted, and the spell ended: In the second spell Wairoa hadi the best of the game, although Auckland just missed scoring once or twice. Wairoa should have also added to their total, but were several times penalised for offside play through over anxiety to score. The Auckland forwards outclassed Wairoa in hooking the ball, but in the open the Wairoa forwards were superior to Auckland. Great interest was taken in the final cup fixture between Waitete and Mataura, andi those present were treated to a good exhibition of the winter game. In the first spell Waitete had decidedly the best of it. Muddlebrook, after a run from near midfield, drew first blood for Waitete. amidst cheers. The kick at goal failed. Waitete continued to hold tlie upper hand, and two opporturities of scoring were lost by a player holdling on just a little too long. The spell ended: Waitete 3, Madura nil. The second half put a different complexion on the game. A. Power (Mataura), from a mark taken by himself, landed' a neat goal, and shortly after E Johnson scored in a good position, after a passing run between Dance, McDermott and the scorer. Power again converted. The maroons pressed hard, and from a loose scramble Gordon scored. Power again being successful with the kick. Mataura 13, Waitete 3.
