A FLEET INCIDENT.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —A funny incident which escaped the notice of most people owing to the late hour at which it occurred, took place last Friday night at about 12.15 p.m. Two officers followed by a patrol of about a dozen American sailors, were marching down to their ships, clearing the street of liberty men as they went. When the last man was fairly abreast of Fort-street, out from the footpath darted a man, who, snatching a Jackie's hat, made off up Fort-street, closely pursued by the irate sailor. The civilian held his own until the end of Fortstreet was reached, when pursuer and pursued alike were lost to view, but the return of the patrol a few minutes later minus his headgear clearly proved that the gay young sport had got clear away.—l am, etc.. OBSERVER.
