SURREY HILLS ESTATE ROADS

BOROUGH COUNCIL AND BAXK. The Mayor of Grey Lynn (Mr. G. Sayers) reported last night on the conference which had taken place between himself and the directors of the Bank of Xew Zealand at Wellington, concerning the formation of roads on the SurreyHills Estate. He had informed the directors, said Mr. Sayers, that in order to settle the difficulty existing between the bank and the Grey Lynn borough on this subject, the Borough Council was willing to take an immediate ballot of the ratepayers, providing the bank agreed to the following proposals: — (1) That the original area as previously offered by the bank on the plan of the Surrey Hills Estate be conveyed to the Grey Lynn Borough Council, subject to the original conditions; and (2) that in addition the bank makes a cash contribution of £5000 to the Grey Lynn Borough Council, such payment to be j expended by the borough on the Surrey I Hills Estate. He had informed the directors that if they agreed to the Council's proposals, the Council would agree to pledge itself to do everything in its power to recommend the ratepayers to accept the proposal and sanction thf loan for the formation of all I the roads in the borough of Grey Lynn, such loan to be between i. -10,000 and £50,000. He had subsequently been in- ' formed that the bank had decided to de- ! eline the Council's proposals. ! Mr. Garland moved that as the bank had refused the Council's proposals, the bank should make overtures. The Mayor seconded. The motion was carried. Messrs. Creamer and Muidoon dissenting.
