HXnSTLT. (From Our Own Correspondent) According to accounts, IH-nntly wHI be deserted far the first two days' «f fleet week. The mines will ,be closed on the Monday and -lutsday, whlie 'tihose who so desire may extei-d their holiday until Thursday morning. The stores will be closed until au.'do'ny on ioesday. The school committee decided to grant two days' holiday, and to close the school for bhe Michaelmas holidays at the usual time. A most enjoyable social, organised by the members of -the Huntly Recreation Club, was held in the Masonic Hall on Wednes- • day evening. A progressive euchre competition, fllled .the flrsi! part of nbe programme, the prizes being won by Mrs. Kllison and •Mr. C. (BaHey, and the "booby" prizes by Mrs. A. Greeii aud Mr. C. Sail. After the very nice supper which the married ladles provided, the remainder at the evening was devoted to music and dancing, Mr. C Richards acting as ILC. At the recant special meetings of the Town Board, the attention of members has been devoted v tha framing of by-laws and t-io insttauiou of a scheme for the sanitation of the towrship. In fine latter matter the Board had 'ho assistance of Mr. Bennet, the local health officer,; who formulated the demands of his Department. A map- of tie township is in preparation. The Whangarei Brass Band and Rifle Volunteers .held their fortnightly social and dance in the Drill Ilall on Thursday evening, under the able charge of Captain Pearce and Bandmaster Kamsey. A very pleasant evenIng was passed. After the ceremony of opening the new p-esbyterian Ciiureh oh Thursday, an oldtime soiree was held In the'adjoining hall, and was largely patronised. In the evening a social Wiis held In the new church; which, was crowded. Addresses were delivered by the Key. J. L. Pnttulo; the Eev.. Hirwkes, Her. Harrison, Key. Jas. Milne. Rev. Thompson, and Mr. Wm. Harrison, of Hanpppal, interspersed with ' vocal and musical selections by members of the ctaolr. The singing of " Gloria " (Mozart) ana " Thou Crowneet the Year" by the choir (undor Mr. H. Lange) was mnch appreciated nnd npplnuded: Miss Clark snirg tha solo, " Pratse .Wattetn for Thee, O God," Mrs. C McKinnon, ". O, Thou that Hearest Prayer"; and Mr. FaY mer, " Ora Pro Nobis." All of these items were enthusiastically received, as wes also a clarionet solo by Mr. H. Lange. £83 10/ was collected at the offertory at the dedication service, which amount was Increased to over £50 by the soiree takings. A feature of the new church (which follows a Gothic design) is the splendid lighting arnmjroments. Seating accommodation Is provided for 200 people, which allows of the choir and organ facing the rest of! the congregation. The foundation stone wns laid by the Hon. Sir J. One of the most successful social dances of the season took place to-night. In aid of the Miners' Union benevolent fund, and the g«!ueral conduct of the 'affairs reflected great credit on the committee of .management, ana particularly the secretary (Miss Newth). The .'ml! was tastefully decorated, and tie music -was supplied by Mr Christian -ana party. ■ \. At a meeting of the "Wain! Hospital trustees last night the tender of Mr. J. Flsk (£920) was accepted for proposed additions and alterations to the hospital buildings. It was decided to apply to the Government for a special grant of £300 towards the cost of the alterations. The performers, without exception, well merited the hearty applause that "wa» accorded them at the conclusion of eaieh Item.
