O'NEILL'S POINT WHARF.

The following report from the Harbour Board's engineer was read at the meeting of the committee this afterj noon:— '•In accordance with the Board's resolution, 1 have considered the proposal to modify the previous schemo for wharf j accommodation at O'Neill's Point wharf, 1 by substituting a sandstone reclamation j for tho greater part of the timber wharf. It U suggested that if such a scheme be adopted, the work would be of a j I more permanent nature, and might evenI tually form the western wall of a valu- '■ I able reclamation area. This is certainly ! ! a reasonable view. The present proposal i ' is to carry out the sandstone bank for a , [ distance of 500 feet beyond the end of j the reclamation already authorised by! the Board, making the roadway 30 feet 1 wide, and having banks of a slope 1A ; to 1. The western bank only to be faced j with bluestone. I should consider this to be a practical proposal in every way." "The surface of roadway would need to be metalled and a good footpath should be formed. Presumably the Tramway Co. would be responsible for laying and upkeep of the roadway for a certain width, on similar lines to the agreement between the City Council and the Auckland Tramway Co., and this should be the subject of agreement between the Takapuna Tramway Co., and the Harbour Board. It must not, of course, be forgotten that a considerable amount of upkeep will be necessitated. Following are the estimated costs of the work:—1. Sandstone reclamations 500 feet by 30 feet on top, faced with bluestone on the western slope, £2100. 2. Farming, kerbing. channelling, metalling, and making footpath, £350. 3. Wharf at end, 150 feet by 40 feet, average width (including waiting rooms), £1500. Total, say, £4000. This should bs compared with my estimate for a wharf 24tt wide, built to carry trains, which amounted to £3500.. The n.?w proposition is undoubtedly more satislactory from an Engineering point of view. After some discussion, it was decided to ask the company to send two directors and its engineer to* confer with the Board upon the matter.
