OLYMPIC GAMES.

WINS FOR AMERICA. LONDON, July 15. C. Sheppard, America, won the 1500 metres race in 4 mm 3 2-5 sec. Lynch, of New South Wales, was beaten in his heat. J. Flanagan, America, won the ham-mer-throwing contest with a throw of 170 feet. Tartakover secured a bye in the 400 metres swimming event. Cooke, of New South Wales, was beaten in his heat. Beaurepaire won his heat in 5 mm 49 sees. Sheppard has put up a record for the 1500 metres, the previous best being 4 mm 5 2-5 sees, put up by J. P. Lightbody at the Olympiad at St. Louis in 1904. He has apparently beaten Guy Haskins, the Christchurch niiler, who was to have represented Australasia in the event. Haskins has beaten Sheppard twice over the mile, and on the second occasion the present winner was disqualified for throwing Haskins when he obviously had his opponent beaten. John Flanagan, the Irish-American athlete, has won innumerable field contests. He holds the record for the 16lb. hammer from a 7ft. circle, the distance being 172 feet 11 in.
