Mr. and Mrs. Albert Mallinson, who-., are now in Auckland, were the subjects £ of a welcome from the Yorkshire Society, f Melbourne, on July 8, that body having secured 150 seats at the concert, from which the members afterwards adjourned to the vestibule of the Town Haffi.to ' meet the distinguished artists. Mr. Kilburn Scott (president) alluded with pride to the attainments of their fellow- , countryman, who hailed from Leeds, and mentioned that whilst the late McL R. Spurr and the comic-opera composer Sj'd- ' ney Jones had visited Australia with entertainments in a lighter Mr. Mallinson had come over to show the* ' art in its more classic aspect. Although -'■■■ the newcomer had gone to Yorkshire for '-•' his bride, he had shown loyalty of a\ :■ different kind in following the example of the King in finding a wife in Denmark, and like his Majesty had returned to England with a queen—most certainly a queen of song. (Applause.) In reply, Mr. Mallinson thanked the society for their cordial support, and referring to the many original works produced from tune to time at the Lee s Festivals, added that these had stimulated his own endeavours in that direction, in which, if ha only succeeded a little, he would feeVtSat he had not lived in vain.
