A MAD MAORI.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Monday. In the Police Court to-day, a Maori named Matin Ngatimo Hohepa, was charged with being a dangerous lunatic at laro-e. Accused did not appear, his condition being such that it was not advisable to take him out of the cells. It appears that Matin drove into Whangarei on Saturday night, bringing his child for treatment for burns. He was accompanied by his wife and a grown-up son. Stopping at Mr. Pryor's Criterion boardinghouse, about midnight he suddenly became demented, stripping his clothes off, smashing furniture, and dancing a haka. Eventually he had to be placedi under restraint. Drs. Good and Baxter having certified to his insanity, he was committed for detention in the Menial Hospital, Auckland, whither he will be conveyed by Constable Boag.
