BIRTH STATISTICS.
According to the reports compiled by the Registrar-General, the number of births' registered during 1907 was 25,094, an increase of 842, or 3.47 per cent over the total for 1906. The number of male children born during 1907 was 12,835, and females, 12,259. For the 20-year period, 1888-1907, the figures show a decline in the proportion of births to every marriage in the previous year from 5.14 to 3.15. For the ten years, 1888-1897, the average is 4.51. Similarly from 1898-1907, the average is 3.33. A decrease is also noticeable in the Australian States. During 1907 there were 244 oases of twin births, and on an average one mother in .every 102 gave birth to twins. In 1907 deaths numbered 10,066, or at the rate of 10.95 in every 1000 persons living, as against 9.31 in the previous year. This is the highest death-rate since 1883, when the proportion was 11.45 per cent per 1000 of the population. The death rates for the principal Australian States are a little higher than- that of New Zealand, but, generally speaking, are far below those for the Un.t-d Kingdom or the European countries.
