MEETINGS & ENTERTAINMENTS

'. * MISSION TO CHILDREN. An important mission was commenced In Auckland on Monday by Mi- W. H. Stanes, Children's Missioner of the Indiaa Suudayscho'ol Union. Mr Stanes' meetings, under the auspices of the Anckland Sunday-school Union, will be held in the various districts of the city and suburbs, a visit to Whangarei being also planned. This week meetings have been held in the Newton Congregational Church. The missioner brings with him a good magic lantern, and on Monday and Wednesday evenings exhibited views of India, the Wonderland of Aiherica, end of Biblical scenes and events. The church was crowded at each of these meetings. Tuesday and Thursday evenings were devoted to object lessons aird blackboard designs. Mr Stanes showed the children a chain, explained how it was made link by link, and then applied the lesson to the growth of sinfulness. A scourge of cords and a red cord represented the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and salvation, from sin through, faith in Him. Other symbols used were a box with a lock ana key, flags, . and."'cups. A black flag illustrated the speaker's warning regarding sin, and a red was used to symbolise the sacrifice on Calvary. The children were urged to enlist under the white flag of love and purity in the Christian ranks. On Thursday evening the meeting was rendered doubly Interesting by the sight on the platform of boys and girls robed in Hindu and Burmese costumes, Mr Stanes recounting many amusing 'and Interesting stories of Eastern life and customs, besides pathetic Incidents of persecution of children, who stood forth boldly as Christians. Last night Mr Stanes again effectively used the blackboard. Friends of the movement assisted with vocal solos, duets, and quartets. Mr Stane's meetings in the Newton Congregational Church will be concluded to-morrow evening, and the mission will be continued each evening next week in St. Peter's Presbyterian Church, Great North-road. SCRIPTURE GIFT SCHOOL. The Franklin Road Scripture Gift School, of which Miss Clarke is the teacher, broke up yesterday for midwinter holidays. The event was celebrated by an entertainment by the children, and- the halfyearly prize-giving, in the presence of a large number of parents and friends. The Rev. G. presided, and distributed the prizes.'. The programme included a number of songs sung in unison, and other items by the children, and recitations, etc., by Jack Ellingham, Emily Hines, Nellie,Carlaw, Zillah Aspinal, William Cahill, Hilda Parkinson, Sidney Hutchinson. Eileen Cahill. At the close of the programme tea was handed round. NORTHCOTE ATHENAEUM. The thirteenth dramatic production of the above society was represented.at Tarry's Hall, Northcote, last evening. In spite of the very wet night, an inconveniently crowded hall more than rewarded the wellsustained efforts of those engaged in the three-act drama "Sunlight and Shadow," by B. i_ <-mcon. The new scenery, painted by Mr. Horace Stebbing, was most favourably commented upon, and added not inconsiderably to the general enjoyment with which the play was received. An orchestra, under the leadership of Mr. W. T. Sharp, assisted most materially in the evening's programme. All those taking part demonstrated an intelligent conception of their respective characters —so much so. In fact, that It would be rather invidious- to differentiate individually. Perhaps .the- most i difficult parts were those pourtrayed by I Mrs. Harry Heap and Mr. Arrold Harrison, and both showed a most careful study of their work. Miss E. Davey. Mrs. Mountifleld, Messrs. Hodgson, Mountifleld, Wyatt, and Gunman all did excellent work. Messrs. ( Hodgson and Wyatt appeared for the first » time, and it is to be hoped, not the last. They were both excellent. Miss Davey and Mr. Wvatt supplied the comedy scenes, aari scored distinctly. Mrs. Monutifield, as Janet Felton, had' a thankless role to fill, arid did it well. Mr. Hodgsori scored all through /as Doctor Latimer as to thte manner-born, and Messrs. Mountifleld and Gunman were most efficient in their renderings. The drama showed careful rehearsal, and congratulations are due to Mr. A. Harrison, .as stage manager, and Mr. Horace H. Hunt in his makings-np.
