THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.
CITY CENTRAL. A special meeting; of the Auckland I branch of the Liberal and Labour Feder- ! ation of New Zealand was held at the I Hibernian Hall last night for the purpose ;of conducting a ballot in connection with I the selection of a candidate for the City Central seat. The President, Mr. P. J. Xerheny, ex- ' plained that the mimes of two candidates had been submitted, Messrs. Alfred Kidd, M.P., and Albert Edward) Glover. Several members of the Auckland branch resided in electorates other than City Central, and these had been excluded from the ballot, those residing in the City Central district alone being entitled to vote. The number of ballot papers sent out was 493 and 472 had been returned. The ballot was declaj-cd as follows:—Kor Mr. Kidd 432 votes, For Mr. Glover 39 votes, informal one. Mr. Kidd was duly declared to be the Liberal and Labour Federation's candidate for City Central at the next election. THE WAITEMATA SEAT. At a meeting of Opposition supporters in the Devonport Council Chambers last night, Messrs. Ij. K. PhilHpps and Joseph Clark were asked to address those present. Both gentlemen offered themselves in the Opposition interests, and agreed to abide by tho result of the ballot, a.s to who should come forward as the Opposition candidate, vice Mr. E. \V. Alison, resigned. After both speakers had expressed their views, a ballot was taken, and resulted in favour of Mr. Phillipps. It is understood that Mr. Clark will be asked to contest another seat in the Opposition interests.
