■ m ■ i ASSISTANT MASTERS' ASSOCIATION.. A Meeting of the above Association "was . held In the Foresters'- Hall, Edjnburghstreet, on Saturday evening, when there was a large attendance. Tlie educational hour was.spent in the exhibition of models, diagrams, and other devices used to make, class teaching more attractive and intelli- - gent, the exhibitors giving explanation of their use. Much practical help was given and received. The subject for next monta is "Grievances." A resolution was forwarded.to. the Headmasters' Association and to the Board, asking that the Michaelmas holidays be taken at the usual time. A dls- , cussion on-the disadvantages of side-schools was adjourned till next meeting. During the evening the following gentlemen contributed Deems: — Messrs Bullen, Plummer, Warren, Gatenby, Hare," Wilson, and Murdock. . ■ . WESLEYAN IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY. The W. Y.M.I. Literary "iand Debating Society held its fortnightly meeting on Friday evening. . Short papers were read on the poets Herrick, Moore, and Burns, and the following songs were rendered: "Scots Wha Hae," "Afton Water," and "A Man's a Man," by Mr W. Carter; "The Last Rose of Summer," Miss Bouskill; "Oft in the Stilly, Night," Mr James; "Cherry Ripe," Miss M. Lee. The accompaniments-were played by Mr L. Prime.- --, , *. ' "WHAT TO READ," "The Study of Literature" formed the subject of an address given by Mr. F.>G. ; Ewlngtou before the Y-M.C.A. Literary Society on Saturday evening last, when there was-a large attendance.' Mr. Eikiu presiding. Tne lecturer advised young men to cultivate wise thoughts andl right feel- I ings, and so study literature that they may become not cyclopedias but men. On the motion ' of the Rev. R. H. Catherwood, the lecturer was accorded a. hearty vote of thanks. ' ST. BENEDICT'S YOUNG MEN'S CLUB. The members and' friends of the above held the second of. their seiies of socials on , Friday evening, 'at St' Benedict's Hall.- ' About ninety couples were present, and a most- enjoyable - evening was' spent./. A euchre tournament was played, and dancing was Indulged in to the-stralns of music supplied by a full orchestra under the direction of Mr.-Cato. .... ■ ST. JOHN AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION. I A well-attended meeting was held In Ellerslte on Friday night to discuss the deslrahleness of forming a branch of St. John Ambu- ' : lance Association. The Rev. F. W Walker presided, and Dr. Clark explained the benefits to be derived from such an organisation. It was resolved to form a ladies' branch, and ' | hold first-aid classes. TSje followlnjr officers were elected:—President, Mrs. Wooller; seeTevary. Mrs. -Mossman* committee. Miss Steadman and the, president- end the secreitray. ALBERT LITERARY AND SOCIAL CLUB. . :._■ "its You Like It" was read in an excellent manner by some of- the members of the above , dub last night. Miss McLean song, "It Was a Lover, and His Lass," and Mr W. Astley, "Blow; Blow, Thou Winter Wind." CONCERT AT DEVONPOBT. A thoroughly successful concert was held at the Foresters'. Hall, Devonport, last • night, the proceeds going towards the' purchase of a new piano for the Presbyterian -. Church School HaiL. The hall was packed with a thoroughly appreciative i audience. A lengthy programme was submitted, those taking part being Misses Macky, D. Cardno. Stewart, Alison,. St. Clair, and Glllct Mrs Gotz, and Messrs Parsons, and F. Pavitt. The accompanists were- Madiune LlHlevre and Misses M. Webb, L.A.8.. Tole, and Lee. Much" of the success! ot fthe entertainment' was due to the efTorts of-'Miss Bessie Stewart.
