TRAMWAY INSPECTORS.

A QUESTION OF APPOINTMENT. toy TclegTaph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The question whether the ticket in- ' spectors employed by the Tramway Board ] belong to the traffic department or to '■ the department controlled by the Board's secretary, engaged the attention of the i Arbitration Court the whole of this after- ' noon. The application was for enforcement against the Christchurch Tramway Board in respect of the appointment of a I ticket inspector from outside the ranks of ; the conductors and mototrr.en. I At one period, it would appear, from I the evidence given to-day, the Christchurch Tramway Board similarly classified them because out of three ticket inspectors appointed since the Industrial i Agreement of 1907 was entered into, bej tween the Board and the Union, two have j bepn appointed from the ranks of the j conductors. The Secretary of the Board, j when asked if he had found it work well Ito appoint ticket inspectors from the i conductors, replied "Not altogether." , Pressed by counsel a s to why the appointI ment of conductors to the position of : ticket inspector was objectionable, the witness replied, "We have only three : ticket inspectors, and the unavoidable tendency is for them to be influenced too j much by their late associates. If we had more Inspectors, the position would be altered." In the course of further evidence the Secretary, replying to the President of the Court, stated that the Board did not recruit its motormen from the I ranks of the conductors. The Court reserved its decision.
