GUMDIGGER BURNED TO DEATH.

The remains of John Dickey, an old age pensioner, who followed the occupation of gumdigging, were found in the deceased's whare at Brown's Bay, Takapuna, yesterday. There is nothing conclusive as to how the whare caught fire, but as deceased was ,-erv fond of reading in lied it is surmised that a mishap with his candle caused the fatality-attended conflagration. The whare "was entirely of raupo. and therefore very inflammable. The deceased was 71. years of age. He has a sister. Mrs. Hugh Douglas, Te Puke, a brother in the same place, and another brother (Mr. Nat. Dickey, a farmer) at Tauranga. Deceased had seen service for New Zealand in the times of the native risings. He was also an old man o' warsman. The body was burnt to a cinder, and is quite unrecognisable. An inquest" is being held this afternoon.
