MEETINGS & ENTERTAINMENTS.

NORTHCOTE SCHOOL COMMITTEE. The monthly meeting of the Northcotc School Committee was held on Thursday night last, Mr Jas. Magianes occupying the chair. The headmaster reported that the average attendance for the month had been 361.2 out of a roll of 412. Mr E. Blundell, pupil-teacher, had been attached to the teaching staff in place of Mr Johns, who had been transferred. It was decided to nsk the Education Board to receive a deputation from the Committee, relative to the question of subsidising vehicles for conveying children to the school. A resolution was passed at the annual meeting of householders in favour of approaching the Board to Five assistance in this direction, owing to the distance and lack of shelter for a large number of the children attending the school. Mrs Bollr.nd, and Messrs Bonrier and Taylor having resigned their seats on the Committee, these vacancies -were filled by the appointment of Messrs E. V. Fltzpatrick, Edmund Johnston, and P. Donahoe. BIRKENHEAD BAND OF lIOPE. The monthly meeting of the Birkenhead Band of Hope was held last evening In the Zion Hall schoolroom. The Rev. G. S. Cook, president, presided over a large attendance. "Catrhlng the Tartar," hy members of the Band of Hope, terminated the proceedings. AUCKLAND ENGINEER VOLUNTEERS. The nnnun.l srooke concert of the company was held in the orderly room. Drill Shefl. on Thursday evening !nst. Captain Tapper presided, assisted by Chaplnln-Cap-tnin Oray-Dixon. Lieut. Ilcwson. and Lieut. Butler,. There was a large attendance of moOTbera of the corps and their friends. •After supper was finished, a programme of soi&3, recitations, and instrumental, solos was rendered by 001.-Seret. Gibson Cpl. ißutterworth, and Messrs. J. Doran, Rldllnjr, Robinson, Anderson, Morrow, and Park. (Mr. Shorland presided at t>he piano. A most enjoyable evening was spent by all. T.M.C.A. LECTURE. The Rpt. Canon , nasc-ldcn delivered a lecture last evonlns in the V.M.C.A. buildings on the bracketed subjects of "Enoch Arden" (Tennyson) and "A Christmas Carol" (Dickens). Mr. C. F. Jones presided. there being a very large attendance. The lectu.ro proved most Interesting and Instructive, the speaker dwelling on various points of merit in conne-rtion wtih the books nnd their authors, while a number of limelight views wore presented for purposes of Illustration. During an Interval a solo was contributed by Miss Bousklll, and at the conclusion of the lecture th<- speaker was accorded a hearty vote of thanke.
