HARBOUR-STREET EXTENSION.

(To the Editor.) " Sir, —With regard to the agitation for Harbour-street extension, City Councillors and the public are invited to note on the city map the isolated) position of citizens at the West End. In .the whole length of New-street there is no outlet to Beaumont-street and Victoria Park. In the block of closed land eastward of Newstreet are three " blind streets," viz., Harbour-street, London-street, and Har-greaves-street. We now ask that Har-bour-street be extended, thu3 providing a continuous thoroughfare from Customsstreet to Marine Parade; and our demand is quite legitimate and proper, for there is no reason why all traffic should be compelled to take the College-road-route. It is probable that we will be offered another temporary track, via Wal-temata-street, and' we shall enjoy the makeshift until the Gas Company feele inclined to further excavate on tjleir property. Then the wearisome agitation will begin all over again. The Ponsonby people have made it clear that nothing less than a permanent road will satisfy them, and they should not be asked to put up with any outlet which they owe to the goodwill of any private company or church organisation. There are several thousand eitziens to be considered in this matter; moreover, such a road must be of importance to the business community in and about Customs-street West. In undertaking the construction of the Grafton Bridge and the Town Hall, the Mayor has kept in view the future as well "as present need's of the city; and, as a business man, he must concede that our claim for a road is a matter that is well worth his attention. We therefore hope for his co-operation when our case advances another stage before the Council.—l am, etc., "PONSONBY."
