THE TRAMWAY STRIKE ANB SPECIAL BOARD OF CONCILIATORS.

(To tie Editor.) Sir, —The Auckland Slaughtermen's Union met last evening, and reviewed the past week's work of their fellowtoilers in the tram service, and expressed their admiration of the members of ' the Tramway Union in loyally protecting the character of their comrades, in which, it was considered, every true unionist should be prepared to" assist, though my union considers every possible means of settling industrial or commercial disputes should be exhausted before the extreme is resorted to. A motion of sincere sympathy and congratulation with the Tramway employees was I passed, and I was instructed to convey to them gratification and good wishes at' the appointment, and for the result, of their appeal to a Special Board of Conciliation. My union, being the first in the Dominion to apply for the sotting up of such a board, and knowing the practical beneficial results thereof, instruct mc to highly commend both parties in this case, »«d wish the Tramway people the sair measure of success, which applied to our own efforts, and | further desire mc to state that the' chairman of the Special Board, which | dealt with the Slaughtermen's dispute, j though interested to a considerable ex- i j tent (Mr. A. M. Myers), conducted our j ' case in a most business-like, fair, and impartial manner, which obviated mu:h I friction, saved much valuable time, and j permeated the whole proceedings with the kindest feeling, and a desire for practical results, irrespective of contend- ; ing interests. I may add that such a spirit of unanimity pervaded an eight days' sitting, that his Worship the Mayor was never once called upon for a casting vote, and employers and workers parted the best of friends at ths conclusion of proceedings; and the Slaughtermen consider Mr. Myers' interest m the present dispute ffli additional factor to his eligibility as ca unbiased and ideal chairman, and recommend his appointment to ths considerations cf both parties to the present dispute. Trusting that a full measure of justice and muttrel goodwill ivill be the ultimate result. I am, r.*TL, F. R. BUST, Secretary * feckland Slaughtermen's Union % • j
