FIGHTING IN SAMOS.

The Porte.has violated the interna-: tional treaty relative to the Island of, . Samos by sending a body of troops to,the ; island owing to disturbances following , the Governor's refusal to summon 'the Assembly. , , Fighting, which was commenced on the , landing of the troops, still continues, and up to the present 150 have been killed or wounded. , The Governor's residence ' has been ' blockaded, and the troops are besieged in * their barracks. . ' The Porte insists upon the recall of the Greek Consul. The island of Samos, which lies off the coast of Asia "vlinor, was granted an autonomous constitution in 1850, and it is this that the Turks are accused of abro- , gating. Stephanaky Musurus Bey is the present Governor of the island. Previous to tne international treaty guaranteeing , its independence Samos was under the , suzerainty of Turkey. It was colonised by the lonians in 1043 8.C., and was taken ■by the Athenians in '44 B.C. Subsequently it became subject to Rome until occupied by the Turks in 1459 A.D. Its population is about fifty thousand.
