SOCIETY FOR THE PROTECTION OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN.

The annual meeting of the Society for the Protection of Y\ omen and Children and the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in the Council Chamber yesterday afternoon. His Excellency the Governor, who was accompanied by Lady Plunket, occupied the presidential chair. There was a good attendance.

Mr. H. Wilding moved the adoption of the report.

Rabbi Goldstein seconded the motion, which was carried nem- con.

< His Excellency, a; president of the Society, said he thought the public could hardly realise what magnificent work was being done so unostentatiously and so tactfully in this city. As far as cruelty to animals wag concerned, it was only recently that they were proceeding determinedly against the offenders. In Auckland and in other cities too. he had observed cases of cruelty to animals, horses often overloaded going up steep hills and occasionally kicked and belaboured. Although it would hardly be the place of the Governor to interfere in such cases, he had sometimes been tempted to do so. The efforts of the Society were now, however, doing much to bring the offenders to justice. As for the reference in the report to the claims of the Society to Government subsidy in this department, he was sure the matter, if properly and moderately represented, would receive sympathetic consideration.

The following officers were then elected for the ensuing year: —
