BAPTIST JUBILEE.
CITIZENS' DIXXEE. Speaking at the citizens" dinner in collection with the jubilee celebrations of he Baptist Tabernacle yesterday, the Jev. Knowles-Kempton evoked applause vita a remark that if there was no SunLay school to-day there would he no :hureh to-morrow. Mr A C. Caughey (president of the iucktand branch of the Y.M.CA). being tsked to address the gathering, said that t wa-s a wise determination not to allow :hese celebrations to end in mere trum-pet-blowing The celebrationis were tn De made the occasion of -a great move :'orwar<l in Sunday school labours, need tor which work was never more urgent than it is to-day. -In this fair young land." continued Mr L'aughey. "there is j i danger of exalting unduly sport and j iimusemenr. .ln-d making material things | such as dock? and herds, wool and butter, mines and factories, ships and railwars, our prime care. .Rather should we deem it our first duty to build, up the noblest type of manhood, the British Empire has seen, and in our judgment this cannot be done apart from the truths of the Bibie.'' The fact that the State schools were secular increased the re- I qjonsibility of the Churches. It was re-! grettable that ministers did not. or could i not. avail themselves more of opportunities for giving religious instruction in day schools. It was gratifying thai there w=re 107.113 children in the Do- I minion enrolled as Sunday school scholars, which number was equal to 2 or j 3 of the children attending day schools. Mr Caughey handed in a donation of £50 towards the school work.
