The first of a series of tennis tournaments, held under the auspices of the Hnnty Recreation Club, concluded on Saturday last, when the prize (a racquet presented for competition among first year lady players by the president of the club, the Rev. A. J. Beck) was won by Miss N. Bailey, who played a strong and sound game throughout. The following are the details, each contest comprising 17 games:—First round: Miss Wilson beat Miss Dean by 9 games against 1; Miss Bnston beat Miss Hackay by 0 against 5; Miss _.. The Board thought that if the Government charged rent for the portion of the closed road, It should also reduce the rent of the tenant from whom the land was taken to make the new road; and the secretary was instructed to write to the -hief Surveyor on the matter. Gravel Pits.—lt was reported the Board had inspected sites for taking gravel pits from Government lands, and recommended that steps be taken to obtain the permission of the Lands Department to three sites for _ueh being granted, namely, on sections 2. 10. and la. of the Fenconrt Es } ate - The recommendation was adopted, and the Lands Department is now being communicated with re the matter Gravelling.— The chairman reported that the gravelling on the Flume and Matangi roads had been let to Mr. Schwartz, at 1/ per load, he being the lowest tenderer. Victoria-road.—The secretary said he had received complaints of the state of Vic-toria-road towards the northern boundary. He was told the holes were now full of water, and that nnless something was done at once the road would soon be as bad as it was during last winter. The chairman said it needed attention, and he and Mr. Booth were deputed to see to it. Pipes.—The following applications for pipes wer granted, subject to certain restrictions: To Mr. Qualtrough, a set of 12----inch ones to be put across the road near his property, provided he puts them in free of cost to the Board, and to its satisfaction. A set of pipes to be pat across the Fenh__»;_ oad * "c" the creamery, at the boundary of Messrs. Wets and Coates' properties; those taken out to be the property of the Board. A set of pipes to be put in the walettable at the entrance to Mr Crouches property, provided the chairman deems it necessary after Inspection A valedictory social was held at Leamington on Friday evening, when Mr. James Dean, the headmaster of the school who is going on a trip to the Old Country was the recipient of a purse of sovereigns, as a mark of the esteem in which he" is held by the inhabitants, and the elder scholars gave him a dressing case. The Cambridge Road Board met on Saturday morning. A letter from the Chief Surveyor at Auckland stated he had no objection to the deviating of a road at Fenconrt which wonW give a short cat to Mr. Atfarm, and the closing of a portion of the existing road; but the Government would not contribute anything to the cost of the proposed alteration, and the Crown tenant, through whose land the new road would go, would also have to agree that hi 3 rent would not be reduced. The chairman is to attend to the gravelling of the northern portion of the Victoria-road. Yesterday three new elders were duly inducted at the Presbyterian Church, namely, Messrs. A. Hopkirk, Jas. Dean, and C. Shaw. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. W. Gow, the pastor. Four yorang men who had ridden bicycles up from 1 tamflton, were speeding along with their heads down, when a young horse shied, and three of the cyclists went head on Into the vehicle. One was insensible for some time. He was taken to the Victoria Private Hospital, but he will be able to return home to-day.

At a special meeting of Hobson County Council held last Friday it was resolved to re-adjust the boundaries of the ridinss within the county. Instead of sever ridings as at present, it was decided, in the event of the proposed Borough of Dargaville being gazetted, to have eight ridings— the present Dargaville riding being expunged from the county, and added to the Kaihu and Tangowahine ridings. The two new ridings wilf be Mangaru and Manganui. The former will include that piece of the present Tangowahine Riding, north-east of the Mangere range. The latter portion, between the present -Wairoa and Okahu Ridings, from the Mititai-road to the boundary of the Kohuroa Block. As a result of these matters brought under the notice of the Prime Minister during his recent visit here, by the Kaipara Chamber of Commerce —Saturday's mail will be delivered over the post office counter in the evening between 7 o'clock and 7.30. Malls which heretofore closed on Sunday evenings at 9.30. will now close at 5 a.m. on Monday nr.ornii_sS —one hour prior to sailing of the steamer. These much needed postal facilities will be greatly appreciated by the pntriic ._. conference of Northern County Councils takes place at Whangarei on 30th April nest Representatives from the Hobson County Council will attend. A movement is projected to form a local company for the purpose of erecting a thoroughly np-to-dnte town hall in Dargaville.
