THE DRUNKARDS
The harvest of unwise convivialists on Saturday night included a brace of natives, who were each allowed to depart with a conviction and a magisterial homily on the folly of their conduct. Mary Campbell elected' to go to the Salvation Army Home for six months, and on this understanding she was liberattM. In answer to Mr. Kettle's query as to where he came from, William Barrett explained that he was " one of the floating population." In view of Ms shaky condition, Barrett was sent for a week's medical treatment at Mount Eden. A young jockey, named Herbert Towers, who was arrested for drunkenness •while under the ban of a jirohibition order, was given a collective line of 15/ and posts. William H. Murray was made the subject of a prohibition order, besides contributing 5/ and costs on account of his-excessive indulgence. For their second offences during the last six months, Albert E. Lowther and George Montague were penalised to the extent of lialf a sovereign and expenses. Five drunkards, who trespassed for the first time, were dealt with in the customary manner. A man who had been charged last week with having stolen an umbrella belonging to the Rev. Mr. Larkins, appeared to have erred through excessive drinking, and a prohibition order was issued against him. EVADING THE CUSTOMS. Instead of paying duty on his tobacco in the usual way, Thomas Eester preferred to smuggle it ashore, with the result that he came before the Court this morning. Mr. Mays, who appeared for the Customs Department, said that the case was an ordinary one. The Customs authorities elected to sue for treble value of the tobacco, by way of a fine. ,' .The. five pounds of the weed was valued, at £2, and Lester was accordingly fined £ 6 and costs. . ON THE FOOTPATH. For using the footpath instead of the middle of the road, an unwary cyclist , named Herbert Davies was fined 20/ and costs. EEMAMDED. A remand "until Thursday was granted in the ease of William Mann, who was charged with having stolen £2 IS/3 belonging to Thomas Billington.
