COMPENSATION FOR LAND. PALIIERSTON NORTH, Friday. The compensation case in Wiich Mr. E. J. Riddiford claimed £2,200 from the Minister for Railways in respect of a piece of land taken from the frontage of his property at Longburn, in connection with the Foxton-New Plymouth railway, was heard at the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr. Jusice Cooper. A large amount of evidence was given and an arrangement was arrived at whereby the claimant should receive £300 in full satj istaetion of his claim, and also two level j crossings giving access to his property, 1 each party to pay their own costs, and 15 guineas to each of the assessors. NAPIER CARNIVAL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) NAPIER, this day. In the Napier Carnival the musical competition for the male quartett prize was won by the Hastings quartett. GENERAL RAIN IN CANTERBURY. CHPJSTCHURCH, this day. Rain was general in Canterbury throughout Thursday night and yester- ! day morning, the fall being sufficiently heavy to give the land a soaking that would do much good to the grass and feed crops. Rain fell heavily all last night, and continues. MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS. LYTTELTON, this day. The steamer Tutanekai, which left Lyttelton for Wellington early Friday morning, will survey the shoal at Kaikoura on her way North. FEILDING LAND SALE. FEILDING, this day. An important sale of suburban sections for residential site's just outside the borough boundary was held last night. Twenty-four sections were sold at prices equal to £300 per acre. Thirteen buyers came from this district and from Wellington and South Island. WIMMERA'S ROUGH TRIP. NAPIER, this day. The Wimmera had a rough passage from Wellington to Napier. One heavy sea smashed the Akaroa Rowing Club's new four-oar boat, which was carried on deck, rendering it useless for regatta purposes on Monday. SUPREME COURT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Justice Chapman to-day sentenced Ronald Grant Gilbert, alias George Moore, to six months' imprisonment with hard labour for theft; and a Maori youth was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon for a similar charge. NAPIER BOWLING TOURNAMENT. NAPIER, this day. Play in the bowling tournament was resumed this morning on a heavy green. Gisborne beat Greenmeadows by 27 to 14 in the first semi-final, and now have to meet Palmerston Co decide who is to play St. John's, the winners o: the A section.
