EARLY COMPROMISE PROBABLE, (By Telegraph.—Pfess Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The "N.Z. Times" has it from reliable authority that certain overtures are Sow under consideration by the Miners' Union which will permit of a compromise upon the Blackball strike being arrived at in the course of the next few days. Mr. P. H. Hickey, one of the dismissed miners, will arrive in Wellington 6a Saturday. Arrangements are being made to hold a public meeting in the evening, at which he will be asked to speak on the matters in dispute between the Miners' Union and the Blackball Coal Go* . DISAPPROVAL OF MEN'S ATTITUDE. PREFERENCE AND RESPONSIBILITr. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, Thursday. The Grey Wharf Labourers' Union hay» expressed regret at the Blackball etrika and disapproval of the men's action. DUNEDIN, Thursday. The Otago Trades and Labour Council this evening passed the following reaoli* tion in regard to the Blackball strike:-. . "That in view of the fact that this Couur cil believes in the principle of conciliatibi and arbitration in labour disputes, it can not see its way to advise the affiliate!? unions to grant assistance to the Black) ball miners." WELLINGTON, Thursday.. During the hearing of the wharf I*' bourers , dispute at the Arbitration Court to-day, Mr. Justice Sim asked, regarding - the demands of the union for preference to unionists, whether anyone, in cast the Court acceded to the request, woull agree to be held responsible for strikes. Mr. S. Brown (the employers' sentative) asked whether the union would agree to make the union responsible, through its funds, for any striked Mr. McLaren (secretary of the union) said this was a large order. The em- , ployers discriminated between the men and he complained that in this case tli« employers had deliberately passed ove; the Conciliation Board. His union wa» always for preserving order.
