THAMES NEWS.
MINES RESUME WORK. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, Monday. There was a big influx of residents yesterday, many coming from Auckland. All the mines commenced operations today. The year promises to be a successful one, a hopeful feeling existing. Considerable interest is manifested in the sinking of the' Hauraki Shaft and the development of the lower levels. Extensive operations are also being carried on at Waiomo, where a large number of men are employed. It is stated that, in addition to the two Priestman dredges ordered from Home, in connection with the drainage of the Piako lands, a sand pump dredge will be utilised. A proposal has been put forward that these may, at convenient times, be used to deepen the harbour near the Thames. I understand that a Thames mine manager will probably be appointed to succeed Mr. Coutts as Inspector of Mines.
