SALE OF FANNING ISLAND.
(Received 9.25 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. ilr ilihvard. representative of the Pacific (.'able Board, states that the sale °f Fanning Island has no Imperial significance whatever, but simply relates to tte sale of the Fanning Island copra fstate, which does not mean the sale of fte whole island. In point of fact, 3Jr Milward points out. that the estate sbsorbs all but about 40 acres of the island. That, of course, does not affect fte question of British control, which regains the same, while the Pacific Cable board's possession remains equally untc»ehed. "Tbe purchase of the estate by a French Roman Catholic missionary, who ranks second to Bishop Vidal, of Fiji, 1™ no religious significance either," added ilr Milward, "as it is known that the missionary wa« only a nominal purt&aser for someone else, who already possesses large trading interests in the island."
