AERATED WATER WORKERS DIS- {.,-'- .-• PUTE.

Mr R. F. Way, representing the workers, said that the parties had come to an agreement as regards wages, arid that the only points disputed were holidays, ■preference to unionists, and underrate workers. Mr Grosvenor (representing the employers) asked that permit for underrate workers should be issued by the Inspector of Awards, and riot by the chairman of the Conciliation Board. They also Objected to the preference to ■ unionists clause on principle, but asked that if the Court decided to include that clause that an employment book be kept by the Inspector of Factories as well as by the j union. Mr Way objected to permits for underrate workers being issued by anyone other than the chairman of the Conciliation Board.

INTERPRETATION OF AWARDS.

Mr Justice Sim has given the following interpretation of the carters' award in reply to the question: What is the meaning of the words "generally observed" in the holiday clause. "The words 'generally observed' in clause 5 of the award mean observed by a substantial majority of the employers affected by the award. -;• • In reply to '.a.question regarding .a. clause in the Auckland waterside. workers' award, "Does the provision re award hot applying to weekly or permanent employees refer only to those ;whb are. permanently employed at work within the scope of the award?"
