The Diocesan Synod to-night discussed, at considerable length Archdeacon Harpers motion for the establishment of a Diocesan Girk' High School in Christchureh, ai an estimated cost of £8500. An amendment in the direction of starting such a school in a small way was rejected, and the debate adjourned till Monday. The question of Sunday funerals. was also discussed, and the following motion earned, on the motion of Archdeacon Scott, "That this Synod welcomes the protest of the Canterbury Trades and Labour Council against the custom of Sunday funerals, and urges the laity of the diocese in all possible ways to support the clergy in their endeavour' to reduce such funerals to occasions of absolute necessity on the ground emphasised by the Council, that Sunday funerals deprive many persons of their day of rest, and stUl more, that the spiritual work of the Church is thereby seriously interfered with." RIFLE SHOOTING. WELLINGTON, Friday. The grant of £700 made by Parliament for the encouragement of rifleehootrng has been allocated among the different military districts as follows:— Auckland. Wellington, Canterbury, and Otago, £ 100 each for competitions open to the public, and £50 each for competitions for volunteers only; Nelson, ■£50 for public competitions and £50 for volunteers only. . The accounts of the National Insurance Company for the year ended' September 30 show an available balance of £46,539 11/10, after paying an interim dividend for the half-year.
