SNEAK THIEVES.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS ON RAILWAY. CBy Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. A new species of sncfi.k thief has been very much in evidence of late, in a class that haunt railway stations and appropriate any articles of value left in carriages by careless travellers. One of these was brought before the Police Court on a charge of stealing a purse containing valuables and -was fortunate enough to get off with a small fine. In the course of his evidence, Detective 1/ivingstone stated" that stealing from railway carriages was becoming almost a profession with certain criminals, and they gave both police and railway authorities much trouble. So intense has the evil become that special steps are being taken to safeguard the interest of travellers, and bring lie light-fingered gentry to book.
