THE RAILWAY CRISIS.
COMPANIES' EXPLANATION. ONE-SIDED PROPOSITION. LONDON, October 24. Lord. Claud Hamiltcm (chairman of the Railway Companies' Association) has issued a statement giving the reasons for the railway companies' action in firmly resisting the demands of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. " The Board of Trade," the statement declares, " controls the railways in many respects, such as the men's hours of work, and there is no need of further control by an irresponsible body. " The railways cannot be moved or closed, nor in case of unions committing a breach of faith can the railways order a lock-out, whereas the union can order a strike. Therefore the railway companies and unions, if the latter's demands are recognised, would be on unequal terms, and the railways be placed at the mercy of the unions." The statement concludes: "The demand for recognition is only the first move in a deep-laid campaign on the part of the Socialist forces impelling the trades unions against individualism and capital."
