WIDENING CUSTOMS STREET.

The question of increasing the width of Customs-street West—a matter of con3id.era.ble importance to those using the Hobson-street wharf — came before the City Council at its meeting last night. Messrs. Massey Brothers wrote that their company was prepared to surrender a portion of their leasehold required for the proposed improvement, in consideration of the Auckland Harbour Board, conveying to them a lease for the same length of tenure, as at present exists, of land noted by the City Engineer, together with £300 in cash, to compensate them for the cost of shifting machines, and making new foundations for theu. All legal expenses would be borne by the Council or the Harbour Board. It was also understood that the Hobsonstreet bridge was to be removed, and that the company would be at liberty to proceed at once with building operations, also that the company would, as far as the Council could assist them, have the same right of access to the dockyard as it had at present.

The Mayor moved that the letter be received, the matter having already been dealt with by the Streets Committee report, which was adopted as follows: —

" The Chairman and secretary of Massey Bros., Ltd., waited on the Committee and agreed to accept £309 as compensation for the removal of their machinery foundations, and to send in a letter to this effect clear of any other conditions. It was resolved to Teeommend a settlement with Massey Bros., Ltd., by a cash payment of £300. Messrs. Burt waited on the committee, and offered to reduce their claim of £3050 to £2550. After discussion the amount was agreed upon at £2400. It was resolved to recommend a settlement •with Messrs. A. and T. Burt, Ltd., by a cash payment of £2400. Mr. G. Rhodes waited on the committee, and agreed to accept the committee's offer of £1000 in settlement of his claim of £1315. It was resolved to recommend a settlement with Messrs. George Rhodes and Son by a cash payment of £1000."
