HIKURANGI NEWS.
{From Our Own Correspondent.)
The Presbyterians of Hikurangi celebrated their second anniversary on the 20th. The Rev. Soule, who conducted both services, referred to the marvellous success which had crowned their efforts at Hikurangi, in spite of hindrances by those whose first duty was to do all to smooth the path and help on the work. There was a debt to be faced which should be looked on as a privilege to clear. While thousands of pounds were given by merchants, etc., in large centres, and blazoned abroad by the Press, the speaker spent four days in Auckland among the same people, and only collected £14 for the back blocks' much needed building. On Tuesday a concert and supper was held in the large hall, which was crowded, and a flue programme was rendered. Songs were sung by Messrs 6. Gowen, L. Soule, G. Soule, F. Sutherland, and Merideth Soule; recitations by Mr Draitt and O. Long. Miss M. Leighton played a violin solo, and Miss B. Leighton a pianoforte solo. The Rev. M. Soule was chairman, and sang in duets with his daughter, and he also gave humorous items. The supper was provided by the ladles of Hikurangi, and the function from every Mr Soule spoke of his departure amid much evident regret on the part of the large audience.
