"Can you speak English," asked the Bench of a native defendant in the S.M. Court this morning. "Kuria Moehau" (I don't know), replied the native. "Why didn't you bring an interpreter, then?" was the next query. "I korero a tangata Maori come here ten o'clock," was the reply, "but he no come." "Go and fetch him then," commanded the Court, and -with a courtly bow and a "Kia Ora, Kia Ora," the native disappeared, to return with the necessary interpreter. Philip Tarrant, a carpenter, of Hamilton, has filed his petition in bankruptcy. The first meeting of creditors will" be held at Hamilton., on Thursday next.
