(By Eelegrapa.—Press Association^ ALLEGED WOUNDING OF. A2S INFANT. WELLINGTON, this day. Edward Murtagh, jockey, charged with having wounded an infant named Tui Leigh, was committed for trial, bail being allowed. HARBOUR BOARDS' CONFERENCE' WELLINGTON, this day. At the Harbour Boards' Conference, a proposal asking the Government to make it clear that harbour boards have the right to levy tolls in respect to passengers was defeated. A BETTING CONVICTION. DTJNEDIN, this day. In Police v. Anderson, a charge of frequenting Prinees-streefc for betting purposes, and a test case, Mr. Graham, S.M., held, xipon consideration, that the evidence disclosed frequenting, and after hearing defendant's evidence as to the fact, recorded a conviction, and imposed the maximum penalty of five pounds. Mr. Hanlon intimated his client's intention to appeal. 3. SUDDEN DEATH. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. Mr. Thomas Frederick Fountaine, grocer, of Kingsley-street, Sydnehain, died suddenly in bed early this morning. Medical examination showed that death was due to heart disease. Mr. Fountaine, who was a married man, was 59 years of age. DECK HAND AS STOKER. ' DUNEDIN, this day. Captain Neville, of the Maheno, was charged in the Police Court to-day with having employed in the stokehold of that vessel a man engaged as a deck hand. The defence showed that the case was one of emergency, a number.of trimmers being ill, while the ship was contending with a strong wind. There was no further available labour in the stokehold, and the captain therefore had to fall back upon the deck hands. The case was dismissed. FIRE AT CHEISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, this diy. McCarthy and Clark's furniture warehouse was gutted by fire, and the .ontents destroyed at two o'clock this afternoon. NEW PLYMOUTH ITEMS. NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. In the Magistrate's Court this morning the District Health Officer proceeded against a doctor and a hotelkeeper for their failure to notify a case of scarlet fever in the latter's hotel. Nominal fines were imposed, after explanations had| been offered. At the Education Board's meeting the "School Journal" came in for hostile criticism.
