ALLEGED ILL-TREATMENT.

CHARGES AGAINST A FARMER. Richard Henwood, a farmer, of Mangere, was charged at the Police Court this afternoon with ill-treating a greyhound on October 6, by shooting it, and leaving it suffering from severe wounds, and also -with threatening one Arthur Neville 'with a loaded gun, and using a quantity of abusive language. Mr. Lundon appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. Sharpies for the defence. The circumstances alleged by the prosecution were that a party of men, who were out coursing on the Sunday in question, were passing Mr. Henwood's property, when one of their dogs sighted a hare, started by another party. The dog set off across the defendant's paddocks after the hare, and Mr. Henwood, appearing on the scene, first threatened Melville, one of the coursing party, with the loaded weapon, and then turned round and fired at the dog. He then rode off, refusing to put the animal out. of its misery, and, later, when asked why he had refused to tennii.te the dog's sufferings, replied, " That he was not going to waste another cartridge on the dog," and used other language alleged. The defence -wras that the defendant :uul other farmers of the district had been greatly annoyed by tlw of coursing parties disturbing and worrying sheep, and that he shot the trasptwstag dog bur. having no second cartridge, was unable to terminate the dog's sufferings. Defendant denied having threatened Neville with the loaded gun, and also denied having used the alleged language, but that he explained he would have finished the dog's sufferings had another cartridge been available. (Proceeding.)
