An adjourned inquest - touching the 1; death of the newly-born child of Liliair Hobbs, a waitress employed at one pi the city restaurants, was held this after*' noon; when a ■ verdict was "returned tha.i the death of thfc ishild was'due to'neglect on the part of the mother. The case, of Roberts v.the Masterton, Gold Dredging Company,, being a claim to debar the use of plaintiff's patent ex-, tension ladder oh tie company's dredge was settled to-day. PIRE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIAi ' : DUNEDIN, this day. ■~ A private advice reports that Messrs. Paltridge and Sons' tannery at Mount Barker, South Australia, was burnt on Saturday. The building was insured for £11.000 in the Standard Company ol Queensland, and most of this amount was reinsured. DRAINAGE-AND.'DISEASE. MASTERTONi ; this day. During the twelve months ended Sep< tember 30 the following number of case*. of infectious diseases have been reported to the Masterton borough authorities:--:: Scarlet fever, 45; diphtheria, 7; typhoid fever, 3. Over fifty per cent of the scarlet fever cases, five of the seven dipUtheria cases, and two of the typhoid fever cases, occurred in the undrained p?r«° n . of the town.
