FIRE AT ASHBURTON.
CBy Telegrapn.—Press Association.) ASHBURTON, Sunday. At two o'clock this morning the business premises in East-street occupied by Mr. David Sutherland, confectioner and caterer, and Mr. A. T. H. Williams, bookseller and stationer, were gutted by fire. Mr. Sutherland, his wife, and a servant girl, who occupied an upper storey as a dwelling, just managed to escape by way of the verandah. The fire commenced in the kitchen of Mr. Suther-L.-a.nd'sr.sh.op, and the rear portion of both premises, with the contents, were gutted before the brigade subdued the flames. Mr. Sutherland's stock-in-trade, fittings, and diningroom furniture were insured for £300 in the North British office, but there was no insurance on the household furniture and personal effects, which were all destroyed. Mr. Williams' stock was insured for £500, but he was carrying over £1000 worth, which was more or less damaged; by - - smoke, fire, and water. The building is owned by Mrs. W. Anderson, and is insured for about £600 in the South British office. The front portions of the shops were not jnaterially damaged by fire.
