Dr.;Bauer, director' of the Carnegie Institute at Washington, U.S.A., devoted to magnetic work-,-has -written to Dr. 0. Coleridge Farr, Of Christchurch,, informing him that. the. .Galilee, the ship engaged on the Carnegie Institute's portion of the magnetic survey of the world-—the Pacific Ocean —will. visit Lyttelton towards the end •of the present year. The Galilee is to go from Sitka, in Alaska, to Honolulu, thence, to. the Marshall Islands, and thence to Lyttelton, at which port She is expected to f arrive between Deceriiber 1 and 15. She will'compare her instruments with those at the' Magnetic Observatory in Christchurch, and also with those on board the Antarctic exploring ship, Nhnrod, which will be in port at the same as the Galilee. Quite a small epidemic of youthful crime has visited Oamaru of late. The latest incident reported was an attemp/ was made by a lad of about fourteeri years of age to "break and enter" the Criterion Hotel. It appears that one of the boarders, whose avocntion causes him to work in the small hours of the morning,, was lying asleep.at three o'clock in one of the back rooms, when he was disturbed by a sound as of someone pulling the wire netting which protects his window. Fancying a joke he looked under the blind and saw a boy of about fourteen on the roof preparing to open the window. Immediately this youth saw that the room was occupied he fled. Subsequent investigation' proved that the embryonic, burglar made a most ingenious entry through the wiridow of a top storey at the back of Mr F. Ongley's offices, .making his entrance in the first place from' Harbour-street. A . board:' placed froni the window" resting ori' the ledge of the'roof coping above the culinary department of ithe hotel gave .him easy accesal>i ' .*'_". \, a •/-.'/_•: J
