[Earl Grey's speech at Port Hope (Ontario) was»parily- reported in our cables of last evening. It will be four centuries nest year since SamueLde Champlain, one of the. greatest,.,oi, French Colonial pioneers fonndeid the .province of Quebec. Bom at Brqnage, in Samtdhga, in 1567, he made his first" voyage" to Canada' in 1603. In. 1604 to 1607 he was engaged in exploring the coasts, and the founding of Quebec, -followed on that expedition in 1608. m 1612, he was appointed lieutaiant of Canada (amder an. honorary governor), and the following year's were "■Kcnpiedwith attacks on the Iroquois, explorations of the interior, and journeys 1» France, until 1629, when he had to surrender to .an English. Meet, and was tirried captive to. England. Liberated in IK2, he returned- to - Canada in 1633, aid died there in 1635.] I .
