In forwarding the official news, the; French "Governor-General of ilndo-Chlna states: — The abdication. Which is in accordance with the wishes of the French Government has been well received by the Annamlte population.
The new King is under the control of a Council of Regency, and Annam may come under some civilising influences.
The ex-king, Thanh Thai, is only 28 years of age now, and his madness was of the type out-Neroing Nero in atrocity.
Last year he killed one of his wives, had the body cooked, and compelled the. members of the Court to devour it under pain of death. Others of his wives were torn into pieces with pincers and thrown Into boiling PH.* Vn old man who protested was shot dead.
